Current Projects

The following is a summary of the current grant projects of the Ohio Developmental Disabilities Council for the 2017-2021 State Plan. Grants are awarded for five years (with an annual continuation review) unless otherwise noted. The names of the grantees awarded the grants will be added to the descriptions soon.

Assistive Technology and Communication Projects

Communication to Increase Public Awareness for People with Disabilities

  • To develop and disseminate products and programs that will influence the perceptions and attitudes of the public toward people with disabilities.
  • To increase awareness to the general public and stakeholders statewide of the contributions of the Ohio developmental disabilities council.
  • To increase awareness to people with disabilities on how they can become a member of the Ohio developmental disabilities council.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to improve the lives of people with disabilities and create community inclusion.

Award Amount: $60,000. Council staff responsible: Carla Cox


Children & Health Projects

Better Child Care for the Student withe Developmental Disabilities

By the end of each fiscal year, support young students with development disabilities to receive quality child care through demonstrated best practices and procedures.

Award Amount: $75,000 per year (five-year grant).
Grantee: University of Toledo

Family Support in Early Intervention

By the end of the first year, assist state and local early intervention leaders with the development of a comprehensive system of family support as part of evidence based early intervention (EBEI) services.

Award Amount: $100,000.

Healthy Lifestyles for People with Disabilities

By the end of each fiscal year, identify and support participation in inclusive activities that promote healthy habits for people with disabilities of all ages.

Award Amount: $103,000 per year (five-year grant).
Grantee: Cincinnati Children's Hospital

Community Living Projects

Strengthening the Voices of Direct Support Professionals

By year two, over 800 direct support professionals who support people with disabilities and their families will be provided information to improve support by encouraging a better trained, more respected, and more involved workforce. (Frontline Initiatives).

Award Amount: $25,000. Council staff responsible: Fatica Ayers

Maximizing Resources and Changing Public Policy for Housing for Adults with Disabilities

By year two of the project, council will increase knowledge and awareness of critical housing policy to be resolved among housing stakeholders and empowered people with disabilities and their families to obtain affordable, safe, decent and accessible housing.

Award Amount: $100,000. Council staff responsible: Fatica Ayers

Hashtag Support for Aging Caregivers#

Aging caregivers who support people with disabilities will have increased access to information that will assist them to find services and supports that provides relief.

Award Amount: $50,000. Council staff responsible: Fatica Ayers

Sustaining & Expanding Accessible and Affordable Transportation for People with Disabilities Anytime

By year two of the project, there will be accessible and affordable transportation services for people with disabilities whenever needed/ wanted, regardless of time of day, and if accessible and affordable transportation isn’t available it will be created or expanded.

Grantee: Hocking Athens Perry Community Action. Award Amount: $109,000. Council staff responsible: Fatica Ayers

Partnership for Housing for People with Disabilities

By year one of the project, council will partner and leverage dollars with the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities (DODD) to work collaboratively with other stakeholders so that people with disabilities and their families will have increased access to affordable and accessible housing in Ohio.

Grantee: DODD Designated State Agency. Award Amount: $50,000. Council staff responsible: Fatica Ayers


Employment Projects

Realizing Employment First for Youth: Evidence Based Practices and Predictors of Adult Success

To increase the implementation of evidence based practices and predictors of post-secondary success with at least fifty (50) youth with developmental disabilities during the school years in order to improve meaningful adult outcomes, specifically community employment.

Grantee: Ohio Center for Autism and Low Incidence (OCALI). Award Amount: $85,000. Council staff responsible: Leslie Paull

Employment Demonstrations/Jobcom

By the end of each fiscal year, improve and expand employment outcomes for people with disabilities through capacity building and systemic change.

Grantee: Goodwill Easter Seals of Miami Valley. Award Amount: $40,000. Council staff responsible: Leslie Paull

Employer Engagement

By the end of each fiscal year, more employers are hiring people with developmental disabilities due to an increase in awareness and capacity building.

Award Amount: $65,000 (2017-19); $105,000 (2020-21). Council staff responsible: Leslie Paull


Leadership Development Projects

Empowering Self-Advocates

By the end of each fiscal year, empower self-advocate leaders with developmental disabilities by increasing skill development and providing opportunities to be effective leaders.

Award Amount: $103,000. Council staff responsible: Leslie Paull


Outreach Projects

Expanding the Amish Community Project

By the end of year two, over 200 families will have increased access to a potential diagnosis and culturally competent follow-up care and support.

Award Amount: $50,000. Council staff responsible: Kenneth Latham

"Reach Out" e-Diversity Newsletter

By year two of project, the newsletter will increase knowledge and awareness to 300 stakeholders including people with disabilities and their families about the benefits of culturally competent interagency collaboration.

Award Amount: $25,000. Council staff responsible: Kenneth Latham

Sustaining the Triple Jeopardy Statewide Network

Identify and reach out to African American women with disabilities in Ohio to participate in Network activities to collectively inform policy, identify barriers to supports and services and demand action.

Award Amount: $25,000. Council staff responsible: Kenneth Latham


Public Policy Projects

DD LEAD (Legislative Education & Advocacy Development) Grant

To improve the coordination of public policy advocacy activities of Council through strategic planning, training, and message development for use by existing and developing advocacy organizations.

Award Amount: $40,000. Council staff responsible: Paul Jarvis

DD Awareness & Advocacy Day Grant

People with developmental disabilities, their family members and friends and others will be active in systems advocacy through a single coordinated awareness and advocacy day.

Award Amount: $38,000. Council staff responsible: Paul Jarvis

Data and Policy Research Grant

To provide Council, advocates and policymakers with clear and concise data and findings related to needed systems change and capacity building in Ohio by conducting research studies and analyses.

Award Amount: $50,000. Council staff responsible: Paul Jarvis
