Current Projects

The following is a summary of the current grant projects of the Ohio Developmental Disabilities Council for the 2017-2021 State Plan. Grants are awarded for five years (with an annual continuation review) unless otherwise noted.

Assistive Technology and Communication Projects

Assessing Assistive Technology Service Delivery in the Ohio County Board of Developmental Disabilities System

To find best practices and solutions to improve the local availability and use of assistive technology by Ohioans with disabilities, and to identify and provide recommendations for changes in policies that may further improve the assessment, funding, and ongoing training and support processes involved with assistive technology.

Communication to Increase Public Awareness for People with Disabilities

  • To develop and disseminate products and programs that will influence the perceptions and attitudes of the public toward people with disabilities.
  • To increase awareness to the general public and stakeholders statewide of the contributions of the Ohio developmental disabilities council.
  • To increase awareness to people with disabilities on how they can become a member of the Ohio developmental disabilities council.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to improve the lives of people with disabilities and create community inclusion.

Identification of Assistive Technology Lending Programs in Ohio

To develop a comprehensive list of assistive technology lending programs/libraries throughout Ohio and the services each provides so people with developmental disabilities can more easily explore assistive technology options.

Children & Health Projects

Better Child Care for the Student withe Developmental Disabilities

By the end of each fiscal year, support young students with development disabilities to receive quality child care through demonstrated best practices and procedures.

  • Award Amount: $50,000 per year

Family Support in Early Intervention

By the end of the first year, assist state and local early intervention leaders with the development of a comprehensive system of family support as part of evidence based early intervention (EBEI) services.

Healthy Lifestyles for People with Disabilities

By the end of each fiscal year, identify and support participation in inclusive activities that promote healthy habits for people with disabilities of all ages.

Community Living Projects

Strengthening the Voices of Direct Support Professionals

By year two, over 800 direct support professionals who support people with disabilities and their families will be provided information to improve support by encouraging a better trained, more respected, and more involved workforce. (Frontline Initiatives).

Maximizing Resources and Changing Public Policy for Housing for Adults with Disabilities

By year two of the project, council will increase knowledge and awareness of critical housing policy to be resolved among housing stakeholders and empowered people with disabilities and their families to obtain affordable, safe, decent and accessible housing.

Hashtag Support for Aging Caregivers#

Aging caregivers who support people with disabilities will have increased access to information that will assist them to find services and supports that provides relief.

Sustaining & Expanding Accessible and Affordable Transportation for People with Disabilities Anytime

By year two of the project, there will be accessible and affordable transportation services for people with disabilities whenever needed/ wanted, regardless of time of day, and if accessible and affordable transportation isn’t available it will be created or expanded.

Partnership for Housing for People with Disabilities

By year one of the project, council will partner and leverage dollars with the Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities (DODD) to work collaboratively with other stakeholders so that people with disabilities and their families will have increased access to affordable and accessible housing in Ohio.

Employment Projects

Realizing Employment First for Youth: Evidence Based Practices and Predictors of Adult Success

To increase the implementation of evidence based practices and predictors of post-secondary success with at least fifty (50) youth with developmental disabilities during the school years in order to improve meaningful adult outcomes, specifically community employment.

Employment Demonstrations/Jobcom

By the end of each fiscal year, improve and expand employment outcomes for people with disabilities through capacity building and systemic change.

Employer Engagement

By the end of each fiscal year, more employers are hiring people with developmental disabilities due to an increase in awareness and capacity building.

Leadership Development Projects

Empowering Self-Advocates

By the end of each fiscal year, empower self-advocate leaders with developmental disabilities by increasing skill development and providing opportunities to be effective leaders.

Outreach Projects

Expanding the Amish Community Project

By the end of year two, over 200 families will have increased access to a potential diagnosis and culturally competent follow-up care and support.

"Reach Out" e-Diversity Newsletter

By year two of project, the newsletter will increase knowledge and awareness to 300 stakeholders including people with disabilities and their families about the benefits of culturally competent interagency collaboration.

Sustaining the Triple Jeopardy Statewide Network

Identify and reach out to African American women with disabilities in Ohio to participate in Network activities to collectively inform policy, identify barriers to supports and services and demand action.

Public Policy Projects

General Assembly Briefing Sessions

By the end of the calendar year, state legislators and their staff will be better informed about the structure and the services and supports of the developmental disabilities system in Ohio, including how federal, state, and local public policies may impact individuals with developmental disabilities, their family members, and professionals in the field of developmental disabilities.

Data and Policy Research Grant

To provide Council, advocates and policymakers with clear and concise data and findings related to needed systems change and capacity building in Ohio by conducting research studies and analyses.

DD Awareness & Advocacy Day Grant

People with developmental disabilities, their family members and friends and others will be active in systems advocacy through a single coordinated awareness and advocacy day.
