Wellman Appointed to ODDC

The Ohio Developmental Disabilities Council (ODDC) today announced the three-year appointment of Curtis H. Wellman of Gahanna, Ohio, as a member of the council. Governor Robert Taft made the appointment.

Wellman works at Goodwill Industries, Columbus, in its Senior Additional Growth Experience (SAGE) program. He also is a member of Solidarity of Ohio, which produces a biennial statewide conference for people with disabilities and their advocates, considered the largest conference of its type in the state and possibly in the nation.

He is on the Human Rights Committee for the Columbus Developmental Center, part of the Ohio Department of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities, and he has held responsible positions for other disability-related organizations.

Wellman lives with disabilities brought about by cerebral palsy. His mother reared him until the age of nine; then he lived in a state institution for 11 years. He has lived in the community for many years.

On his application for ODDC appointment, he said, “My life is now my choice. I would like to be appointed to the DD council so that I can insure that people like me have a choice!”

ODDC consists of people who have developmental disabilities, parents and guardians of people with developmental disabilities, representatives from concerned state agencies, and nonprofit organizations and agencies that provide services to people with developmental disabilities.

The ODDC is one of a national network of state councils committed to self-determination and community inclusion for people with developmental disabilities. ODDC receives federal funding to help carry out its mission of developing new and better ways of advocating, increasing capacities to assist people, and making needed changes to systems.
