The Ohio DD Council has over 30 members. Sixty percent represent people with developmental disabilities, and parents and guardians of people with developmental disabilities. The remaining members include representatives from state agencies, non-profit organizations and agencies providing services to people with developmental disabilities. Ohio DD Council members are appointed by the Governor. Professional staff support the Council's members and committees and handle day-to-day operations, administration, planning, advocacy, and project monitoring. The Ohio DD Council operates under the authority of the federal Developmental Disabilities Assistance and Bill of Rights Act of 2000.
Ohio DD Council members, staff and individuals identify a problem or need that should be addressed, such as issues in self-determination, housing, transportation, or healthcare - just to name a few. The issues are agreed upon by Council members and identified in DD Council's Five-Year State Plan. The State Plan is used to create specific grant proposals. When grants are available, the Ohio DD Council will announce it so that anyone may apply for the grant. The Ohio DD Council currently administers more than 25 grant projects. Each year, grant review panels award projects to successful applicants who have submitted proposals.
The Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities assists the Ohio DD Council as the federally mandated designated state agency.
