May 7, 2020
by Kathy Foley, SIL

In light of COVID-19 and wanting to ensure everyone’s health and safety, Services for Independent Living (SIL) is mixing it up a bit with their Northeast Ohio Transportation Equity Forum. We will be holding a series of webinars with regards to transportation issues. More to come on all the topics as we work with speakers to reschedule from an in-person format to a virtual format. We hope to have that to you shortly. In the meantime, join us for the first session and please mark your calendars for Wednesday mornings in June!

Vital Connections: Expanding and Protecting the Rights of People with Disabilities in Public Transportation is Part One of the Northeast Ohio Transportation Equity Forum. This online presentation will give an overview of disability rights with regards to transportation. We will also discuss how disability rights play into current "hot topics".  In addition, tips will be provided on how professionals and individuals with disabilities can advocate for additional public transportation. SW and CRC continuing education credits have been applied for.

Our speaker, Katie Hunt Thomas is the Disability Rights Attorney for the Ability Center of Greater Toledo, a Center for Independent Living in northwest Ohio with the mission to assist people with disabilities to live, work, and socialize within a fully accessible community.  She received her B.A., magna cum laude, from Xavier University and J.D., cum laude, from the University of Toledo College of Law.  She is the author of the Ability Center’s Olmstead Barriers in Ohio: The Problems Faced by People with Disabilities in Ohio in Achieving Community Integration.
